Il nome deriva dal mwdwgreco mweamweqπυκνὸς, mwegpyknòs, cioè mwewfitto, folto, denso, coperto e anche dal greco mwfamwfqἃκανθα, mwfgàcantha, cioè mwfwspina, aculeo, pungiglione, in quanto ha l'mwgaopistosoma ricoperto di aculei.

Le quattro specie oggi note di questo genere sono state reperite in mwgwAfrica: la specie dall'mwhaareale più vasto è la mwhqP. tribulus, rinvenuta in varie località dell'mwhwAfrica centrale e mwiameridionale; le altre tre sono mwiqendemismicite-ref-araneidae-1-0[1].

Dal 1932 non sono stati esaminati esemplari di questo generecite-ref-araneidae-1-1[1].
